1942-04-09 2021-08-27
Born April 9, 1942, in Live Oak Texas, Marva Ann Sampson (Times) was the only daughter of Roy Times Sr. and Odiest Brown Times. She was the middle child, having an older brother, Roy Times Jr. and a younger brother, Edward Lewis Times. She grew up attending Vine Grove Christian Church in Live Oak (Matagorda County). Marva graduated from Prairie View A & M College, now University, in May 1964 with a B.A. from the School of Arts and Sciences.
Two months later, on July 3, Marva Times married Donnie Gerald Sampson on the island of Maui, Hawai’i. She and Donnie lived in Hawai’i for three years and gave birth to their first daughter Hope Mylene Sampson. Five years later, their second daughter Donnyelle Nicole Sampson was born in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Pamela Anette Sampson came along two years later in Monrovia Liberia and Kim Alicia Cottonham was born a few years after the family moved from West Africa to Texas in 1972.
Marva had an illustrious teaching career of over 30 years beginning on the island of Maui and continuing as a public-school teacher in Houston, first teaching English and Spanish at Phyllis Wheatley High School before moving to Westbury High School in Southwest Houston. There she taught English and ESL before retiring. During her years in public-education, Marva was active in many teachers’ organizations.
Donnie and Marva chose University Christian Church, then under the leadership of Reverend C.M. Cooper as their family’s church home. Marva was an active member of UCC for over 30 years, serving the church as an ordained deaconess and president of the UCC board. She loved teaching and attending Sunday school. Marva was also known to write personal birthday letters to many of her closest friends and family members.
Ann, as she is still fondly called by many who knew her as a child, leaves to mourn her three living daughters: Hope, Pamela and Kim (Mario); and eight grandchildren – four grandsons Jordan, 26; Gherimyah, 21; Toran, 21 and Mateo, 9 & four granddaughters – Haileigh, 24; Malyrie, 13; Truleigh, 11 and Maali Ann, 4. Also missing her already are her two brothers, Roy Jr. (Theresa) and Edward; her sister-in-law Jean Johnson, as well as her numerous nephews, grandnephews, nieces, grandnieces, cousins and close friends. We take peace in knowing that, in death, she is reunited with her husband Donnie, her daughter Donnyelle, her parents Odiest and Roy Sr. and her nephew Brandon Times (son of Edward).
